Week 1 Notes, Homework, and Videos

NOTE 1:   PUPPY SHOULD ALWAYS BE TRAINED ON A LEASH  AND COLLAR (MAKE SURE IT CANNOT NOT THEIR HEAD) OR A METAL TRAINING COLLAR.

NOTE 2:  EXCEPT FOR" SIT ON THE DOG" AND "PUPPY RELAX FOR EXAM" EXERCISES, 5 MINUTES SHOULD BE PLENTY TO TRAIN THE PUPPY.  IT SHOULD CERTAINLY BE NO LONGER THAN 10 MINUTES AT EACH SESSION.

NOTE 3:  TRAINING THE PUPPY WITH THEIR KIBBLE AT MEAL TIMES IS AN IDEAL TIME TO TRAIN THE LURED SITS AND DOWNS, PLACE, AND LURED HEELING EXERCISES.

NOTE 4:  ALWAYS BE IN A GOOD, CALM MOOD BEFORE TRAINING, AND KEEP THAT THROUGH THE TRAINING.   PUPPY TRAINING IS VERY LOOSE.  YOU WILL GET THERE AND YOUR DOG WILL GET THERE.  DON'T BECOME FRUSTRATED.  SOME DAYS WILL BE HARDER THAN OTHERS EVEN AFTER YOU GET GOING.

NOTE 7:  FOOD DELIVERY SHOULD BE IN CLOSED HAND UNTIL YOU SAY YES AND/OR THE DOG BACKS OFF FROM YOUR HAND.

NOTE 8:  YOU ARE ONLY REQUIRED TO WORK AN HOUR A DAY WITH YOUR PUPPY.  IF YOU DON'T GET TO SOMETHING WITHIN THAT HOUR, JUST MAKE SURE YOU WORK ON THAT THE NEXT DAY.

NOTE 9:  THE BLUE LINKS GO TO EXERCISE DIRECTIONS AND VIDEOS.
  1. Read through the entire blog.
  2. Luring Exercises 5-10 minutes  Goal:  To just get your puppy used to the positions and working with you.

  3. Flirt Pole 3-5 minutes Goal:  To get your puppy used to playing and being engaged by a toy.   Play training can be very valuable.

  4. Relax for Exam 15 minutes. Goal:  To teach the puppy to relax when handled.  You want to get to the point where your puppy is so relaxed, they basically nod off through the different body part touches.  NOTE: IF YOU NEED TO, YOU CAN ROTATE THIS WITH SIT ON THE DOG EVERY OTHER DAY.

  5. Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal:  Is for the dog to learn and teach themselves to relax when their owner sits down to do something else.
NOTE: IF YOU NEED TO, YOU CAN ROTATE THIS WITH RELAX FOR EXAM EVERY OTHER DAY.

  6. Intro to Place  (only needs to be done once) 3 minutes or less 15 reps whichever comes firstGoal:  To just introduce your puppy to the place object.

  7. Send to Place 5 minutes or less Goal:  To eventually be able to get three sets of four in a row (good performance).  Don't worry if you don't get to that this week.   Mainly focus on the four in a row and keep the time short.

  8. Circle Place 5 minutes or less Goal:  Eventually get to a minute (not this week).  Just go slowly one circle at a time once the puppy masters each number of circles four times in a row (four send to place and then circle).

  9. Long Place 5 minutes to startGoal:  To simply get your puppy comfortable staying on the place for a period of time, and decrease attempts to get off on his own.  I would note each time if attempts occurred and how many occurred. You do NOT need to restart the time if your puppy gets off the place.  Just bring them back with no comment.
